The aim: the first page of search results in Google

Why is a place on the first page of Google search results so important?

Well, the sad truth is that a place on the second page delivers very few visitors. And a place on the third or subsequent pages delivers a lot less.

Websites that are on the first page of search results in Google account for 91.5% of all visitors that surf to a website via a search engine. Websites on the second page obtain just 4.8% of these visitors; websites on the third page 1.1%.

Research figures from Chitika - 2013

Visitors via Google per page search results

There are also huge variations on the first page of organic search results: a website in first place obtains five times more visitors than the website that is in fifth place, for example.

But one thing is certain: if your website is not on the first page of search results, it might as well be invisible to the average internet user.

Conclusions:

  • Your web page is better off getting onto the first page of organic search results, the other pages will deliver few visitors.
  • A place on the first page, even 9th (CTR = 2.6%) or 10th (CTR = 2.4%), delivers the same number or more visitors than an average advert with Google Adwords (CTR = 2.5%) - and you have to pay for these every time. (*)

(*) CTR or click-through rate is a percentage which indicates how many people click on a link compared to the total number of views. A CTR of 10% means that if one hundred people that see an advert or a link, ten click through to the underlying web page.
